How many new drugs did the FDA approve this year? Not the headlines — every single one. This study compiles all 46 novel drug therapy approvals the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research granted between January 12 and October 9, 2026: one roughly every six days. Every number below comes from the agency's own Novel Drug Approvals for 2026 table, content current as of October 9, 2026, cross-checked against FDA news releases and secondary recaps.

The short version: the pipeline is running hot. The longer version is what it's running on.

Key findings

  • 46 novel drugs in 270 days (January 12 to October 9, 2026) — roughly one approval every six days.
  • Q3 was the busiest quarter: 22 approvals (July 6, August 7, September 9), matching HCPLive's quarterly recap of 22 new therapies.
  • Cancer and rare genetic diseases dominate: 10 oncology drugs and 10 rare-disease drugs — 43% of the total between them.
  • Seven first-ever therapies, including the first oral carbapenem cleared in the US (Utebzi), the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor (Lipfendra), and the first small-molecule oral GLP-1 for weight management (Foundayo).
  • Small molecules still rule: 31 of 46 approvals (67%) are small molecules; 15 (33%) are biologics or advanced modalities — including two once-weekly insulins approved in the same year.
  • September was flawless: nine approvals from nine PDUFA target dates, seven of them early, with not one complete response letter issued, per Life Science Daily News.

The cadence: a new drug every six days

46 approvals in 270 days works out to about 5.1 per month — one every 5.9 days. September was the peak: 9 approvals in 30 days. May was close behind with 8. April was the quietest full month with just 2. October's single approval (Hovilpri, for herpes simplex lesions in immunocompromised patients) covers only the 1st through the 9th.

What they treat: cancer and rare disease lead

We assigned each approval a therapeutic area from its FDA-approved use. Oncology and rare genetic/metabolic diseases tie at 10 apiece — 21.7% each, 43% combined. Infectious disease is next with 6 (including two new antibiotics for complicated UTIs), then immunology/inflammation and cardiometabolic with 5 each, neurology/psychiatry with 4, diagnostics and imaging with 3, ophthalmology with 2, and anesthesia with 1.

The modality mix: small molecules still win

For all the talk of biologics, 31 of the 46 approvals (67%) are small molecules — including the year's biggest formulation stories. The remaining 15 (33%) are biologics or advanced modalities: 5 monoclonal antibodies (one an antibody-drug conjugate), 4 peptides, 3 enzymes or fusion proteins, 2 insulins, and 1 antisense oligonucleotide.

Two of the small molecules deserve special attention. Lipfendra (enlicitide) is the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor — cholesterol lowering without an injection, per the FDA's July approval notice. Foundayo (orforglipron), approved April 1, is the first small-molecule oral nonpeptide GLP-1 receptor agonist for weight management: a once-daily tablet with no food restrictions, per Medscape. And the insulins tell their own story: Awiqli (March 26) and Onswik (September 23) are both once-weekly basal insulins — two shots-a-week diabetes drugs approved within six months of each other.

Seven firsts

Seven of the 46 approvals are first-ever therapies for their indication or the first of their formulation class — each confirmed by an FDA news release or the agency's own approval headline:

DrugApprovedThe first
Utebzi (tebipenem pivoxil)6/17/2026First oral carbapenem antibiotic ever cleared in the US, for complicated UTIs
Lipfendra (enlicitide)7/15/2026First oral PCSK9 inhibitor, to lower LDL cholesterol
Foundayo (orforglipron)4/1/2026First small-molecule oral nonpeptide GLP-1 receptor agonist, for weight management
Emcitate (tiratricol)9/28/2026First treatment for MCT8 deficiency
Zanvastro (zilganersen)9/3/2026First drug to treat Alexander disease
Mimrylo (rusfertide)8/28/2026First drug of its kind for polycythemia vera
Isembyld (apitegromab-mstn)9/11/2026First therapy to target muscle loss in spinal muscular atrophy

The antibiotic story is the one to watch. After more than a decade of retreat, 2026 brought two significant new antibacterials: Utebzi for complicated UTIs and Zaynich (cefepime + zidebactam, approved May 29), an intravenous combination built for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria — a pairing DelveInsight calls a signal that “innovation against antimicrobial resistance is possible.”

The rare-disease tilt

Ten of the year's 46 approvals target rare genetic or metabolic conditions — Menkes disease, Alexander disease, MCT8 deficiency, Hunter syndrome, achondroplasia, Arginase 1 deficiency, spinal muscular atrophy, polycythemia vera, and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (twice: Atebrioz and Pasatru). Three of the seven firsts above are rare-disease drugs. The FDA's rare-disease approvals page, which tracks select announcements, lists more than a dozen 2026 clearances — the novel-drug table understates the trend, since it excludes label expansions of older drugs into rare indications.

22% of 2026's novel drugs treat rare genetic or metabolic diseases — and three of the year's seven first-ever therapies are for conditions most doctors will never see.

Tracked total: 46 novel drug therapy approvals — January 12 to October 9, 2026.

Methodology

Scope. All 46 rows of the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research's Novel Drug Approvals for 2026 table, content current as of October 9, 2026. This is CDER's count only — it excludes approvals by the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (cell and gene therapies, vaccines) and generic-drug approvals. Brand name, active ingredient, approval date, and FDA-approved use are transcribed from the FDA table; indication summaries above are shortened from the FDA-approved use text without changing meaning.

Our categories. Therapeutic areas (oncology, rare genetic/metabolic, infectious disease, immunology/inflammation, cardiometabolic, neurology/psychiatry, diagnostics/imaging, ophthalmology, anesthesia) and modalities (small molecule vs. monoclonal antibody, peptide, enzyme/fusion protein, insulin, oligonucleotide) are Calder Brief's own assignments, made from the FDA-approved use text and active-ingredient nomenclature. The FDA table carries no expedited-program or first-in-class labels; “first” claims are sourced individually to FDA news releases or the agency's approval headlines, cited below.

Cross-checks. Monthly counts sum to 46 and the Q3 subtotal (22) matches HCPLive's independent Q3 recap. The seven “firsts” were each verified against the cited FDA or trade-press source. The September approval-perfect record (nine target dates, nine approvals, zero complete response letters) is reported by Life Science Daily News, which tracks PDUFA calendars.

Limitations. The table is a living document: the FDA updates it as approvals land, so the count will grow before year-end. A few rows on the FDA page carry “Drug Trials Snapshot” links (Decnupaz, Icotyde, Zycubo); we did not re-analyze trial demographics. Oncology counts here cover novel drugs only — OncoDaily's broader H1 tally of 22 oncology approvals includes label expansions of already-marketed drugs.
