How much money has artificial intelligence absorbed in 2026? The headlines give you one mega-round at a time. This study puts them all in one place: 23 verified AI funding rounds announced between January 1 and October 10, 2026, totaling at least $294.8 billion. Every figure below is traced to a named publication or company announcement. Nothing here is estimated, modeled, or rumored.

The headline is concentration. The five largest rounds, OpenAI's $122 billion in March, Anthropic's $65 billion and $30 billion, xAI's $20 billion in January, and Waymo's $16 billion in February, account for 86% of the tracked total. That is the shape of the AI economy in 2026: a handful of giants at the top, a land rush underneath.

Key findings

  • At least $294.8 billion across the 23 largest verified AI funding rounds of 2026. The five largest rounds account for 86% of it.
  • OpenAI's $122B round alone equaled 77% of ALL global venture funding in Q3 2026 ($159B, Crunchbase), the largest private financing on record.
  • In Q1 2026, four companies absorbed roughly two-thirds of all venture capital worldwide: OpenAI ($122B), Anthropic ($30B), xAI ($20B) and Waymo ($16B) took about $188B between them (Crunchbase).
  • A record 27 companies raised $1B+ rounds in Q3 2026, up from 16 in Q2 and 14 in Q1, absorbing roughly a third of all global VC that quarter (Crunchbase).
  • Infrastructure had its quarter: eight companies raised $3B+ in Q3, led by frontier labs and datacenters; five of the eight were founded in the last four years.
  • Europe's largest tech equity round ever: Mistral AI's €3B Series D (Sept 8) at a >€21B valuation, led by Samsung, part of a €15.8B September for European startups (tech.eu).
  • Anthropic raised $95B in 105 days (Feb 12 to May 28), with its valuation jumping 2.5x from $380B to $965B, briefly making it the world's most valuable private company.

The scoreboard: the 10 largest verified rounds

Ranked by announced amount. Bars are on a linear scale, which is the point: after the top three, every other round is a sliver.

The full dataset: 23 verified rounds

Every round below was announced between January 1 and October 10, 2026, and confirmed by a named source. Amounts are as reported; where a source gave a minimum (“more than $3 billion”), the table uses that floor and the $294.8B total is therefore a minimum.

A record quarter for mega-rounds

Zoom out from AI specifically and the pattern holds across all of venture. Crunchbase data for Q3 2026 shows global startup funding at $159 billion across nearly 6,000 companies. That was the weakest quarter of 2026 so far, down 25% from Q2's $212 billion, and it still beat every quarter since Q2 2022. The first three quarters of 2026 totaled $679 billion, the highest nine-month total on record.

The more striking chart is the count of billion-dollar rounds. In Q3 2026, an all-time record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more, up from 16 in Q2 and 14 in Q1. Around a third of all global venture capital in Q3 went to those 27 companies. Eight companies raised $3 billion or more in the quarter, with frontier labs and datacenters leading; five of the eight were founded within the past four years.

What the data shows

Concentration is the story. OpenAI's $122 billion March round, backed by Amazon ($50B), Nvidia ($30B) and SoftBank ($30B) at an $852 billion valuation, was by itself equal to more than three-quarters of all global venture funding in Q3. Add Anthropic's two 2026 rounds ($30B in February at $380B, $65B in May at $965B), xAI's $20 billion Series E in January, and Waymo's $16 billion February round, and five financings explain $253 billion of the $294.8 billion tracked, 86% of it. In Q1 alone, those four companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Waymo) absorbed roughly $188B, about two-thirds of all venture capital deployed worldwide that quarter, per Crunchbase. The capital structure has also changed shape: much of this money arrives bundled with compute, Amazon's $50B includes cloud capacity, Nvidia's $30B comes with 5 gigawatts of Rubin systems, and OpenAI committed to spend $100B on AWS over eight years.

Infrastructure won the third quarter. Of the eight $3B+ Q3 raises, the names are datacenters and compute as much as models: Crusoe ($3.9B Series F), Nscale ($3B+), plus Databricks ($5B at $190B, with a $7B revenue run rate growing 80%) and Safe Superintelligence ($5B from Nvidia at a $32B valuation, before shipping a product). The application layer is raising too, Cognition at $2B+ and a $48B valuation, Instinct at $1B and $10B, but the biggest checks are going to whoever owns the picks and shovels.

Capital is going sovereign. Mistral's €3 billion Series D on September 8, led by Samsung with EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund co-leading, is the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company, at a valuation above €21 billion, nearly double its level a year earlier. It landed inside a €15.8 billion September for European startups across 300 deals, with 25 rounds above €100 million (tech.eu). Moonshot AI and Kling AI, both raising $3B+ in Q3, show the same pattern in China: frontier AI is now a matter of national industrial policy, funded accordingly.

The pace keeps accelerating. Anthropic's Series G to Series H run is the cleanest illustration: $30 billion on February 12, $65 billion on May 28, 105 days apart, valuation up 2.5x from $380 billion to $965 billion, briefly overtaking OpenAI as the world's most valuable private company. Its run-rate revenue grew from about $14 billion to $47 billion across the same stretch. When the pricing multiple actually fell (from ~27x to ~20.5x sales) while the valuation more than doubled, you are watching revenue growth do the heavy lifting, not just multiple expansion.

Five rounds, OpenAI, Anthropic twice, xAI, Waymo, explain $253 billion of the $295 billion tracked. Concentration is the story.

Methodology

Scope. The dataset covers AI companies, defined as foundation model labs, AI infrastructure (datacenters, chips, data platforms), and AI application companies, and includes rounds of $250 million or more announced between January 1 and October 10, 2026. It is a ranking of the largest rounds, not a census of all AI funding.

Verification. Every amount, date, valuation, and lead investor is traced to a named publication or company announcement, linked in the table. Rounds reported only as rumors, or without on-the-record confirmation, were excluded. That includes widely discussed but unconfirmed 2026 raises; if a number could not be tied to a source, it is not in the table.

Exclusions. Public listings are not funding rounds: Cerebras' $5.6 billion IPO (May 14, 2026) is noted in the table but only its $1 billion February Series H counts toward the total. Meta's $14.3 billion Scale AI investment closed in June 2025 and is outside the 2026 scope. The Boring Company appears in Crunchbase's Q3 $3B+ list but is a tunneling company, not an AI company, and is excluded.

Currency and minimums. Mistral's €3 billion is carried at approximately $3.5 billion per contemporaneous reporting. Where Crunchbase reported “more than $3 billion” without a precise figure (Moonshot AI, Nscale, Kling AI), the $3 billion floor is used, which makes the $294.8 billion tracked total a minimum. The true figure is higher.

Changelog. October 11, 2026: added xAI ($20B, Jan 6), Waymo ($16B, Feb 2), DeepSeek (~$7.4B, June), Advanced Machine Intelligence ($1.03B, Mar), and World Labs ($1B, Mar). Tracked total revised from at least $249.4B across 18 rounds to at least $294.8B across 23 rounds.
